Probiotics for Constipation in Children
A recent study suggests that the probiotic Bifidobacterium breve may improve symptoms of functional constipation in children. Functional gastrointestinal disorders, like constipation, occur when the bowel appears normal but does not function properly.
Earlier evidence suggests that probiotics may help improve constipation in adults. These beneficial bacteria are known to help the body maintain a healthy intestinal tract and assist with digestion.
The recent study included 20 children (3-16 years old) who had functional constipation. They received 108-1,010 CFU of Bifidobacterium breve daily for four weeks. The researchers found that Bifidobacterium breve significantly decreased abdominal pain, increased defecation frequency and improved stool constancy. No side effects were reported in the study.
The researchers call for a large randomized controlled trial to further evaluate these findings.
