Diabetes Increasing Among American Adults

New Report Reveals Diabetes Increasing Among American Adults

A new report released on Wednesday, Jan. 5, stated between 1996 and 2007, the number of American adults treated for diabetes rose from 9 million to 19 million, as reported by Yahoo!® News. The number of adults treated for diabetes increased from 4.3 million to 8 million in people aged 65 and older,; 3.6 million to 8.9 million among adults aged 45 to 64; and 1.2 million to 2.4 million among people aged 18 to 44. Both type 1 diabetes, an autoimmune disease; and type 2 diabetes, closely related to obesity were included in these numbers; however, more than 95 percent of diabetics are type 2.

Yahoo! News reported Christine Resta. M.D., of the division of endocrinology at Maimonides Medical Center, New York, saying: "Rates of diabetes have risen in all age groups. Twenty years ago, type 2 diabetes was unheard of in children and young adults, but now it is being diagnosed even in these younger age groups. Part of this rise is increased detection—patients are being evaluated and tested sooner and more often; but part of it is a real increase in the rates."
