Supplements for Diabetes

Several nutritional supplements may be beneficial for both the treatment and prevention of type 2 diabetes, according to a recent study.

Type 2 diabetes, the most common form of diabetes, occurs when the body is unable to properly use the insulin produced by the pancreas, causing insulin resistance. This results in a reduced production of insulin and ultimately high blood sugar levels.

Researchers in Canada recently conducted a comprehensive literature search in twelve databases to identify new studies assessing the effects of various nutritional supplements on the treatment and prevention of type 2 diabetes. Those found to be potentially effective included alpha-lipoic acid, aloe, melatonin, astragalus, cinnamon, rhubarb, vitamin D and vitamin E.

The authors concluded that many nutritional supplements may be beneficial for type 2 diabetes treatment and prevention; however, well designed clinical trials are necessary for each treatment before conclusions can be made.
