Surviving The 21st Century - The Beef Industry Has A Cow!

Surviving The 21st Century was a program born out of frustration, every where I looked, I saw problems in the way that people in America were being treated by Big Food and Big Pharma. Unfolding before my eyes was the script for a really bad Sci Fi movie. Maybe a cross between Rollerball (the original), Soylent Green, and The Omega Man.

Several months ago I had the good fortune to bump into two people with similar views, the husband and wife research and writing team of Mannie Barling and Ashley F. Brooks.

Surviving The 21st Century was born!

I was not sure that we could make a difference, in fact I am still uncertain. But I can say with a level of certainty that Mannie Barling, Ashley F. Brooks, and Simon Barrett are names that are not welcome in the world of Big Food.

This week we aimed our guns at the Beef industry. Oh don’t get us wrong, all of us love a juicy steak. We just prefer ours ‘au natural’.I like to add my extras after the big juicy porterhouse is on my plate. I like it cooked rare, some fresh horseradish sauce, and a sprinkling of really good sea salt and fresh ground pepper.

The industry ‘wonks’ were on us like stink on sh!t, oops stink on a factory farm.

It was with great humor that we read the ‘wonks’ and ‘wonkettes’ comments. It was also interesting to see the different approach taken by the Beef people, from lets say the Soy people. When we talked about Soy on an earlier program, we elicited a response from Dr. Andrew Buy My Soy Nuts Weil himself! I can only assume that Dr. Andrew Weil is still licking his still rather tender ’soy’ nuts after that adventure….

Surviving The 21st Century is not going to change the world. But maybe we can change how a few people think.

The world of Beef and Cattle in general is a complex one. Factory Farming methods have created an environment that few consumers give little thought to. The steak in the meat department is ruby red, the flesh is marbled, you are salivating at the thought of putting this on the BBQ. But is there another story? Is there a backstory that might surprise you? Alas, the answer is yes.

I am not usually a big fan of Chinese proverbs, but there is one that catches my attention ‘The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step’.

There are few households that do not use some form of ammonia based cleaning products, great for floors, great for toilets. It kills germs, it makes everything look and smell so much better. What is less well known is the use of ammonia in the preparation of beef patties served in a leading fast food chain. A dose of ammonia makes even the most hardy E. Coli bacteria run for the hills!

Personally I like to keep cleaning products and food separate, but what the hey, maybe this is a blessing in disguise:

Oh don’t throw that burger out because you are full, save it and we can use it to clean the toilet
