Surviving The 21st Century

Surviving The 21st Century - Radio Wrap

My guests this week were the husband and wife writing and research team of Mannie Barling and Ashley F. Brooks. Also joining us was Dr. Daniel Dantini and his wife Chris Dantini. Their company Sage Medical Labs have become a leader in the area of food intolerances.

With Thanksgiving in a few days I had suggested to Mannie and Ashley that we spend some time exploring Thanksgiving fare from a nutrition standpoint. In fact I planted the seed that we should try and create a meal using frozen and packaged goods.

That was all the encouragement they needed. It was off to the local ‘megamart’ in search of Holiday goodies. Top of their shopping list was the one pound Swanson Hungry Man Meal, White Turkey, dressing, gravy, potato, veg, and a desert, all packaged in a tray, just pop it in the microwave and you are good to go!

I was pretty certain that the nutritional value and ingredient list would be interesting, and my guess was correct! One variation of Mannie’s menu involved a Hungry Man Turkey Dinner, a couple of cola’s and a tasty treat for after dinner. In nutritional terms this (not unreasonable) menu for someone living alone, left me with my jaw on the table. The sodium alone would be enough to kill a Rogue Elephant, and the sugar content outrageous. But this is just the beginning, MSG and other other chemicals abound.

The Hungry Man dinner contains 160 ingredients! This far exceeds the number of herbs, spices, and extracts found in the average kitchen!

Of course we had to be fair, Swanson are but one manufacturer of this kind of product. Mannie and Ashley are nothing if not dedicated to their mission. What they have uncovered should make everyone think twice before purchasing.

I think that Dr. Dantini and Chris Dantini were as shocked as I was at Mannie’s undercover work!

Dr. Dantini pointed out that a number of the substances included in this holiday feast were also known carcinogens! Great! Lets eat stuff that is known to cause cancer!

Of course no Surviving The 21st Century program would be complete without mentioning the food industries favorite addition High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS), this is a sugar about as natural as Crack Cocaine. In fact the manufacturing process is somewhat similar.

Is HFCS safe? The FDA says it is, the studies say it is. Of course those studies are funded by big food and big pharma. Anecdotal evidence tells a very different story.

Dr. Dantini has done extensive research into the subject, his findings are somewhat different to the accepted data. HFCS has even found its way into certain saline drips used in hospitals, Dr. Dantini has seen numerous examples of patients having adverse reactions. Of course finding independent scientific data on the subject is very difficult. As Dr. Dantini pointed out, 80% of medical studies as funded by organizations with a vested interest, Big Pharma is the term that has become commonly used. 40 years ago the vast percentage of studies were funded by the Federal Government through the National Institute of Health (NIH), today the fund around 10%.

The question becomes, if you have a vested interest how can you possibly have an independent study? The cynic in me uses the analogy of the Laundry Detergent TV ads. A person at random is given two products (unmarked) and they must determine which works best. Or the blind taste test that is so popular, which pizza tastes better. These ads are not objective, but they are not designed to be, they are designed to sell products.

Is the same tactic being used by Big Pharma and Big Food?
