Oral and Topical Use of Supplements and Botanicals to Help Alleviate Pain and Adverse Side EffectsLow Dog discusses how an herbalist might formulate a specific pain remedy for a patient.
For topical pain relief, many natural products are available.
Capsaicin ointments from cayenne pepper (Capsicum annuum) are approved by the Food and Drug Administration as OTC pain relievers. Arnica (Arnica montana) and comfrey (Symphytum officinale) are also widely used. Capsaicin has strong clinical results. It can be associated with a topical burning sensation and must be applied several times daily to be effective. Arnica is effective and is generally well tolerated but prolonged use may irritate skin. Comfrey root and leaf extracts have a very good safety profile. While internal use of comfrey is discouraged due to its PA content, this is not an issue in topical use.
