Hypertensives: Go Easy on the Tylenol
Acetaminophen (aka Tylenol) may be easier on the stomach than aspirin and other NSAIDs, but it may not be so kind to the heart. Daily use can raise blood pressure.
University Hospital Zurich cardiologists randomized 33 people with heart disease to 1,000 mg acetaminophen thrice daily—typical doses for routine pain relief--or placebo for two weeks. The latter produced no changes, but the former upped subjects’ pressures a bit--from 122.4 to 125.3 mmHg systolic; and from 73.2 to 75.4 mmHg diastolic (Sudano I, et al. Circulation. 2010; 122(18): 1789-96).
These are small rises, and not a concern for most people. But they could be problematic for borderline hypertensives. Of course, beyond “Which analgesic is safe?” is the question of why someone’s in such pain that they’re reaching for analgesics thrice daily. Don’t forget to ask that one!
