Swedish Diabetes Prevention Study - The Malmo Study
The Malmo study was a nonrandomized trial that demonstrated a diet and exercise program administered over 5 years reduced the incidence of diabetes (Erisson and Lindgarde 1991). A unique aspect of ths study is the 12-year follow-up report in which the mortality in the impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) intervention group (n = 288) was equivalent to the 6.5% mortality in the normal glucose tolerance group and less than the IGT group (n = 135) that received routine care (Eriksson and Lindgarde 1998). This is the only diabetes prevention study that has documented improvement in mortality.
