Do You Know the Risks of Energy Drinks?

Energy Drinks and Adolescents

A recent study warns pediatricians about the rising consumption and possible dangers of energy drinks in adolescents and young children.

Energy drinks, also known as energy boosters, are beverages that contain stimulants and often combinations of vitamins and minerals. Common ingredients include caffeine, creatine, guarana extracts and taurine. The number of energy drink products on the market, such as Red Bull® and Rockstar®, is currently growing.

According to the review, energy drinks are consumed by 30-50 percent of adolescents and young adults. Of the caffeine overdoses reported in the United States in 2007, 46 percent occurred in individuals younger than 19 years old. These reports were often associated with energy drinks, many of which contain unregulated amounts of caffeine.

The authors noted that many ingredients included in energy drinks lack scientific research, and that the potential for toxicity and adverse effects in adolescents is a concern.

The researchers advised pediatricians to educate patients and families on the potential dangers of energy drinks. Additional research is necessary to further evaluate these findings.
