Oral and Topical Use of Supplements and Botanicals to Help Alleviate Pain and Adverse Side Effects
In her regular column on supplements and botanicals, Low Dog addresses questions about natural pain medicines and natural products that can alleviate the adverse side effects of prescription or over-the-counter (OTC) drugs.
Many effective pain prescription and OTC pain drugs have their origins in natural medicines, such as opiates, from opium poppy (Papaver somniferum), and aspirin, derived from salicylate precursors found in willow (Salix spp.) bark and meadowsweet (Filipendula ulmaria).
Willow bark is still used by many herbalists and is believed to have fewer and weaker adverse side effects than aspirin. Willow bark extract is endorsed by the German Commission E for fever, rheumatic ailments, and headaches.
