Although chia seeds are increasingly being used to promote weight loss, evidence of effectiveness is lacking, according to a Natural Standard evidence-based systematic review that was recently cited in the New York Times.
It has been suggested that chia seeds may expand in the stomach, thereby reducing a person's appetite. However, only two human studies have tested the effects of chia on heart health and body weight. One showed some beneficial effects on the heart, but neither showed any effect on weight loss, according to the review.
Additionally, early animal and laboratory studies suggest that chia may help lower cholesterol and help prevent tumor growth. However, it is unclear if similar effects would occur in humans.
