Single Dose of Combined Adaptogens May Enhance Attention during Stress

ADAPT-232 (Swedish Herbal Institute; Gothenburg, Sweden) is a standardized formulation of high-ethanol hydroalcoholic extracts of rhodiola (Rhodiola rosea) roots, schisandra (Schisandra chinensis) berries, and eleuthero (Eleutherococcus senticosus) roots. This double-blind, placebo-controlled, pilot, clinical trial examines the acute effect of a single dose of ADAPT-232 on the mental performance of healthy subjects "performing stressful cognitive tasks."

The aim of this study was to assess the effect of a single dose of ADAPT-232 (a standardised fixed combination of Rhodiola rosea L., Schisandra chinensis (Turcz.) Baill., and Eleutherococcus senticosus Maxim) extracts on mental performance, such as attention, speed and accuracy, in tired individuals performing stressful cognitive tasks.

These results are in alignment with prior studies indicating that ADAPT-232 improves cognitive performance in people under stress. The authors conclude that ADAPT-232 "efficiently and quickly improves attention, speed and accuracy in situations of decreased performance caused by stress and tiredness." They comment that more research is needed to determine the optimal ADAPT-232 dose and regimen needed to continuously produce a stable effect.
