Olive Oil and Liver Function

A recent animal study suggests that olive oil may have beneficial effects on the liver.

In the study, 80 male rats were exposed to a moderately toxic herbicide known to cause oxidative stress. All of the rats showed signs of significant liver damage.

The rats were then fed a standard control diet or received dietary supplementation with olive oil and its phenolic fractions (hydrophilic or lipophilic).

The researchers found that olive oil improved liver oxidative status. Additionally, olive oil and the hydrophilic and lipophilic fractions improved the fatty acid composition in the liver.

However, additional research is needed before conclusions can be made.
