Diabetic Retinopathy

Fact #24: Approximately 40% of all people with diabetes have diabetic retinopathy. An estimated 5% of persons with diabetes have the sight-threatening form of this disease. 14

Diabetes and Hypertension

Fact #27: In 2003-2004, 75% of adults with self-reported diabetes had blood pressure greater than or equal to 130/89 millimeters of mercury (mm Hg), or used prescriptions for hypertension. 16
Fact #28: The risk of stroke or any cardiovascular event is almost doubled when the hypertensive patient has diabetes. 17
Fact #29: Blood pressure control reduces risk of cardiovascular disease among persons with diabetes by 50% to 323%, and the risk of microvascular complications by approximately by 33%. 18

Diabetes and Heart Disease

Fact #30: In 2004, heart disease was noted on 68% of diabetes-related death certificates among people aged 65 years or older. 19

Diabetes and Chronic Kidney Disease

Fact #34: In 2000, approximately 41,046 people with diabetes in the U.S. initiated treatment for end stage renal disease, and 129,183 underwent dialysis or kidney transplantation. 20
