What is Amalaki?

Amalaki in Ayurvedic Healing

Researchers at Annamalai University in India recently reviewed the therapeutic potential for amalaki and its benefits for various conditions in Ayurvedic healing.

Amalaki, also known as Phyllanthus emblica and Indian gooseberry, is a small-to-mid-sized tree that produces fruit often used in Indian cooking and eaten raw. Amalaki juice contains high levels of vitamin C, and has been used in traditional medicine alone and in combination with other herbs to treat many medical conditions. However, additional research is needed before any conclusions can be made regarding its effectiveness.

The authors noted that amalaki is an important herb in Ayurveda. Ayurveda, meaning "science of life," originated in ancient India and is likely the oldest form of natural medicine. The goal of Ayurveda is to reach optimal health on physical, physiological and spiritual levels.

In traditional medicine, the authors noted that the amalaki fruit has been used to treat diarrhea and jaundice. In Ayurveda, the fruit has been used as an herbal preparation for rejuvenation, and also as a tonic to strengthen and energize the body.

The authors commented that the various amalaki plant parts show antidiabetic, antibacterial, antioxidant and other potentially beneficially properties; however, additional research is necessary to evaluate these potential benefits.
