Qi gong and Tai Chi May Help Mind and Body

A recent review of scientific data suggests that the Chinese practices of qi gong and tai chi may positively affect both the mind and body.

Both therapies include regulated breathing and slow and purposeful movements. Earlier research suggests that qi gong and tai chi may boost immunity, promote emotional health and affect various other components of human physiology. Researchers theorize that these practices may work through mind-body connection; the meditative state may cause the release of hormones or other substances in the body.

Researchers searched multiple databases for qigong, tai chi, taiji and tai chi chuan. They included seventy-seven randomized controlled trials in the review. Outcomes included: bone density, heart and lung effects, overall physical function, falls, quality of life, confidence, miscellaneous self-reported outcomes, psychological health and immunity.

The researchers found that positive results were generally reported in the studies. The authors concluded, that "research has demonstrated consistent, significant results for a number of health benefits in RCTs, evidencing progress toward recognizing the similarity and equivalence of Qigong and Tai Chi."
