Diabetes Catastrophe’ Facing U.S.

With the incidence of diabetes rising 90 percent in the past few years, the United States is facing a “diabetes catastrophe" that will significantly affect the health care system as well as the pharmaceutical and dietary supplement industries. Jay Udani, M.D., shared his thoughts on this situation at SupplySide West, October 2010, with Doug Peckenpaugh, Virgo Publishing.

Udani said he had completed a systematic review of human clinical trials on ingredients that affect blood sugar, and has found several that hold promise from a mechanistic standpoint to reduce the rate at which glucose is absorbed, as well as the potential to impact adiponectin release from adipose tissue. In his opinion, researchers need to look at these potential pathways that affect blood sugar regulation to develop efficacious ingredients and formulas to stem the growth in diabetes incidence.
