Diabetes in New York State

Fact #1: More than 1.8 million New Yorkers statewide have diabetes.1
Fact #2: 1.1 million have been diagnosed with diabetes (i.e., 7.7% of the population). 2
Fact #3: 730,000 are living with diabetes but don't know it. 1
Fact #4: An estimated 3.7 million to 4.2 million New Yorkers (at least 25% of the adult population) have pre- diabetes. 3
Fact #5: Diabetes prevalence has doubled since 1994. 4

Diabetes Disparities

Fact #6: All minorities, except Alaska Natives, have a prevalence of type 2 diabetes that is two-to-six times greater than that of the white population. 5
Fact #7: Certain minorities also have higher rates of diabetes-related complications and death, in some instances by as much as 50 percent of the total population. 5
Fact #8: Diabetes is the 3rd leading cause of death among Blacks and 5th among Hispanics. 6
Fact #9: In New York City, 16% of Asians have diabetes, which is the highest rate of diabetes among all racial and ethnic groups. 6

Complications of Diabetes

Costs of Diabetes

Lack of Adequate Care for Diabetes
Fact #18: Diabetes patients received only 45% of recommended clinical care using 13 indicators based on national guidelines for screening, diagnosis, treatment and follow-up. 10
Fact #19: In New York State, up to 15% of adults with diabetes did not receive hemoglobin A1c measurement in the previous year. 10
Fact #20: In New York City, more than a third of diabetes patients did not receive a recommended eye or foot exam in the previous year. 11

Diabetes and Amputations

Fact #21: In 2006, there were 4,771 amputations in New York State. 12
Fact #22: The age-adjusted rate of lower-extremity amputation among people with diabetes is approximately 15 times higher than people who do not have diabetes. 13
Fact #23: Several health centers have experienced a 44-85% reduction in the rate of amputations among individuals with diabetes after the implementation of improved foot-care programs. 13

Diabetic Retinopathy

Fact #24: Approximately 40% of all people with diabetes have diabetic retinopathy. An estimated 5% of persons with diabetes have the sight-threatening form of this disease. 14
Fact #25: Diabetes is the leading cause of new cases of legal blindness among adults 20-74 years of age. 15
Fact #26: Annually, 12,000 to 24,000 people lose their sight from diabetic retinopathy in the U.S. 15

Diabetes and Hypertension

Fact #27: In 2003-2004, 75% of adults with self-reported diabetes had blood pressure greater than or equal to 130/89 millimeters of mercury (mm Hg), or used prescriptions for hypertension. 16
Fact #28: The risk of stroke or any cardiovascular event is almost doubled when the hypertensive patient has diabetes. 17
Fact #29: Blood pressure control reduces risk of cardiovascular disease among persons with diabetes by 50% to 323%, and the risk of microvascular complications by approximately by 33%. 18

Diabetes and Heart Disease

Fact #30: In 2004, heart disease was noted on 68% of diabetes-related death certificates among people aged 65 years or older. 19
Fact #31: Adults with diabetes have heart disease death rates 2 to 4 times higher than adults without diabetes. 19

Diabetes and Chronic Kidney Disease

Fact #32: Diabetes is the leading cause of end-stage renal disease, accounting for about 43% of new cases in the U.S. 20
Fact #33: In New York State, 43% of hospitalized chronic kidney disease patients have diabetes. 21
Fact #34: In 2000, approximately 41,046 people with diabetes in the U.S. initiated treatment for end stage renal disease, and 129,183 underwent dialysis or kidney transplantation. 20
