Summer flights are on their way, along with the germs that ride along. Follow these tips to “put the odds overwhelmingly in your favor of not catching a cold or the flu,” says Dr. Mark Gendreau, an air-travel expert and vice chair of emergency medicine at the Lahey Clinic in Burlington, Mass.:
1. Drink lots of water. Nasal membranes — an important barrier against germs — don't work as well if they dry out. Keep in mind that the air on planes is very low in humidity.
2. Use saline nasal spray. Sprays can increase how rapidly the tiny hairs that line nasal passages beat back and forth to expel germs. They also help keep membranes in the eyes, nose and mouth moist.
3. Carry hand sanitizer. Buy products that contain at least 60 percent alcohol and clean your hands frequently, especially before touching your face. Since germs can linger in public restrooms, it's a good idea to use sanitizer even after washing with soap and water.
4. Wipe down trays and seat handles. Both can be contaminated with dangerous germs such as drug-resistant bacteria. Clean with alcohol-based hand sanitizer or an antibacterial wipe.
5. Increase the ventilation at your seat. Saliva droplets from sneezing, coughing and even conversation can fly up to six feet in the air and rain down on nearby passengers. Turn the vent above your seat to medium flow and position it so the current moves just slightly in front of your face.
6. Consult your doctor. People who are pregnant, battling a serious respiratory infection, undergoing chemotherapy or taking an immunosuppressant are at higher risk for complications from an infection and may need to take extra precautions.

Professor's no-nonsense lecture about sugar
Professor's no-nonsense lecture about sugar, obesity goes viral
Dr. Robert Lustic gives a presentation on his research into sugar and the obesity epidemic in the United States. The lecture video has become a hit on Youtube. AText Size By Laura Casey, Contra Costa Times
How to make healthy desserts for kids
An academic lecture that lasts nearly 90 minutes usually will get about a million yawns and, if lucky, a hundred hits on YouTube.
But a recently discovered talk by a doctor with a fresh take on the obesity epidemic recently rocketed the YouTube video to viral status. Supporting the thesis that sugar is nothing short of “poison,” Dr. Robert Lustig, a professor of clinical pediatrics in the division of endocrinology at University of California-San Francisco, clearly has hit a nerve. And his no-nonsense message about health and sugar is spreading through media channels like wildfire.
The U.S. will not get a handle on the obesity epidemic, Lustig says, if the public continues to view obesity as the result of gluttony and sloth. No one chooses to be fat, especially not the thousands of babies and toddlers in the United States who are obese or at risk for it. That's why obesity should be seen as a public health crisis on the level of AIDS rather than a personal responsibility issue, he argues.
“(AIDS) initially was thought to be everybody else's problem,” Lustig says. Eventually, public policy turned the AIDS epidemic into a public health concern that all people should be aware of and protect themselves against, he says. Research and education policy followed.
A powerful public speaker, Lustig is getting a not-undeserved reputation as an anti-sugar activist. He frequently calls sugar “poison” and a “toxin” and his 2009 UCSF lecture on the subject recently went viral on YouTube with more than 1.2 million views. The speech makes the case that Americans fill their diets with sugar now more than ever. Our addiction to sugar may be a main reason for the obesity epidemic and, in turn, growing incidences of heart disease, diabetes and some forms of cancer, among many other problems.
“We have to understand what's causing obesity. We couldn't do anything about AIDS until we understood what caused it,” he says. The most recent data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention indicates that more than 30 percent of men and women in the U.S. are obese and many more are overweight.
Lustig's thoughts on sugar — both fructose and sucrose — and obesity are getting the attention of noted health experts and journalists, including journalist Gary Taubes, author of the best-selling book “Why We Get Fat: And What to Do About It”. In Taubes' April 13 article in the New York Times Magazine, he says Lustig's argument that sugar is a harmful chemical is worth further evaluation even if it his statements are controversial and not totally supported by all health experts and diet researchers.
Fitness expert and author Alan Aragon, for example, argues that Lustig has a “myopic, militant focus on fructose avoidance” and argues for a caloric balance instead of avoiding sugar altogether.
One thing is certain, though: Lustig is correct about Americans' increasing sugar load. Marisa Moore, a registered and licensed dietitian and spokeswoman for the American Dietetic Association, says most Americans are getting 22 teaspoons of added sugar per day. “Added sugar” is basically sugar not found naturally in fruits, vegetables and milk. Experts recommend only 6 to 9 teaspoons of added sugar per day.
“At 22 teaspoons, that's about 350 calories extra per day which can lead to as much as three pounds of weight gain per year,” she says. After it's consumed, sugar turns into glucose and when the liver processes excess glucose, it is turned into fat.
And, like Lustig, Moore doesn't differentiate between white sugar — sucrose — and the demonized high-fructose corn syrup when she's talking about excessive sugar consumption.
“There is not a preference for one over the other,” she says.
One reason we're consuming so much sugar, Lustig says, is because in the 1980s, public health officials suggested a lower fat diet to minimize the risk of heart disease.
He points to the Snackwells brand of cookies and sweets. Produced by Nabisco, the treats are known to be lower fat alternatives. But in order to taste good, Lusting says, they are loaded with sugar.
In fact, many products that are labeled “low fat” have added sugars, he says. Why? Because without the fat and sugar the food would “taste like cardboard.”
“As far as I am concerned,” Lustig recently told doctors at Highland Hospital in Oakland, Calif., “our food has been adulterated.”
We are also being overloaded with sugar in some of the drinks we consume. Regular sodas are full of several servings of sugar, as are specialty coffee drinks and fruit juices.
Although Lustig is an in-demand speaker right now, he has made it clear that he has no dreams to be Dr. Phil. He's not writing a book or going on tour to tout weight loss strategies. Instead, he says he ringing the alarm that there can be several reasons Americans of every age are obese and overweight other than just gluttony and sloth.
“The concept of obesity being personal responsibility is something I think has been a major problem in (the field of medicine),” he says.

Perseverance and Self-Reliance
John D. Rockefeller. Nearly 75 years after his death, the name still generates images—both positive and negative. Most people recognize him as an icon of wealth from days gone by. Rockefeller founded Standard Oil; he was instrumental in creating an industry, developing the oil infrastructure and improving living conditions.
From Titan: The Life of John D. Rockefeller, Sr., by Ron Chernow, we learn that “Rockefeller prevailed at Standard Oil because he had mastered a method for solving problems that carried him far beyond his native endowment [ability]. He believed there was a time to think and then a time to act. He brooded over problems and quietly matured plans over extended periods. Once he had made up his mind, however, he was no longer troubled by doubts and pursued his vision with undeviating faith.
"Unfortunately, once in that state of mind, he was all but deaf to criticism. He was like a projectile that, once launched, could never be stopped, never recalled, never diverted.”
At 38 years old, this hardworking visionary controlled nearly 90% of the oil refined in the U.S. According to his biographer, Rockefeller was…
FEARLESS: “Always inner-directed and indifferent to the approval of others, he was therefore free of a certain boyish vanity.”
GOAL ORIENTED: “With the benefit of hindsight, we can see that there was something extraordinary about the way this stolid boy pinpointed goals and doggedly pursued them without any trace of childish impulsiveness.”
“Despite his slow, ponderous style, once he had thoroughly mulled over his plan of action, he had the power of quick decision.”
“John D. Rockefeller drew strength by simplifying reality and strongly believed that excessive reflection upon unpleasant but unalterable events only weakened one’s resolve in the face of enemies.”
PERSEVERING: “Rockefeller was the sort of stubborn person who only grew more determined with rejection.”
STRATEGIC: “Instead of just tending to his own business, he began to conceive of the industry as a gigantic, interrelated mechanism and thought in terms of strategic alliances and long-term planning.”
“One of Rockefeller’s strengths in bargaining situations was that he figured out what he wanted and what the other party wanted and then crafted mutually advantageous terms.”
“He had a great general’s ability to focus on his goals and brush aside obstacles as petty distractions.”
SELF-RELIANT: “He adamantly opposed any government program or private charity that sapped the frontier spirit of self-reliance.”
“… he hired talented people as found, not as needed.”
A GOOD MANAGER: “Every cost in the Standard Oil universe was computed to several decimal places.”
“…he created an atmosphere of ceaseless improvement.”

Most Americans ‘Weight Conscious’
Eight out of ten consider themselves "weight conscious," according to a new national survey released from the Calorie Control Council. Five out of ten (54 percent) said they want to reduce their weight, and noted that exercise, cutting back on sugar, using low-calorie or reduced-sugar products, and restricting the size of meal portions are the most common tactics. An additional 28 percent of Americans are trying to control or maintain their weight.
"People are now hearing what health authorities have been saying for years–Americans are too heavy," said James Hill, Ph.D., executive director of the University of Colorado Anschutz Health & Wellness Center and co-founder of America On The Move, a national program with a mission to improve health and quality of life by promoting healthful eating and active living among individuals, families, communities and society. "Although America has a serious weight problem, the good news is that more and more people are trying to address it."
Among weight-loss methods, cutting back on foods high in sugar was mentioned most often (by 86 percent of respondents). Other popular methods of weight control by those trying to lose weight include eating smaller portion sizes (85 percent) and consuming low-calorie and sugar-free foods and beverages (78 percent). Also, nearly two-thirds (64 percent) of Americans trying to lose weight say they perform moderate exercise for 45 minutes at least three times per week. Only 17 percent said they skip meals to diet, 13 percent use diet pills and 8 percent follow restrictive weight-loss diets.
The several obstacles that stand in people’s weight management goals include: not enough exercise (69 percent), metabolism slowing (62 percent) and too much snacking (52 percent). Some of the reasons given were more gender specific: women often eat for emotional reasons (50 percent) while men find themselves overeating at mealtimes (44 percent).
"Many have taken the first step – admitting they want to lose weight for overall better health," said Beth Hubrich, a registered dietitian with the Calorie Control Council. "It's all about calories in and calories out. For healthy weight loss, reduce calories while eating a balanced diet, and burn calories through physical activity."
This nationally projectable survey was conducted in November 2010 by Booth Research Services, among 1,203 males and females aged 18 years and older. The Calorie Control Council, established in 1966, is an international nonprofit association representing the low-calorie and reduced-fat food and beverage industry. The Council has been tracking dieting and weight control habits in the United States since 1984.

Iceberg Lettuce - Is It Really Bad For You?
In general, darker green vegetables are more nutritious, but iceberg lettuce is preferred over most other types of lettuce due to its juicy crispiness and is still a very healthy choice. Low in saturated fat and cholesterol, it's a good source of iron, vitamin B6, K, A, and C. It is high in dietary fiber, and contains traces of omega fatty acids and folate, which helps fight heart disease. Iceberg also contains lutein and zeaxanthin, carotenoids that reduce the risk of cataracts and age-related macular degeneration.
When buying iceberg lettuce, select the darkest green one you can find to benefit from the most nutrition as with all lettuces, the darker the green, the higher the concentrate of nutrients.

Staying Positive In A Negative World
Having a positive attitude is one of the most important characteristics of successful individuals. A positive attitude will bring you countless advantages in a time when the majority of the world is struggling. The rest of the world may be caught up in doom and gloom but here are some helpful ways you can stay positive:
Don't think negative thoughts. Your thoughts become your reality. If you only focus on positive and empowering thoughts, you will be completely in control of your future. Success will come so much easier when you focus on empowering thoughts.
Avoid negative people. Negative people want to bring you down because misery loves company. If you can't help the negative people in your life become more positive you have to let them go because it will only be a matter of time before you become negative just like them.
Don't read negative stories. Newspapers and television are full of doom and gloom stories and some of it just can't be avoided. But you can balance the equation by reading as many positive and feel good stories as you can. You can actually learn from television if you are watching the right programming.
Stay Hopeful. People can achieve greatness after failing over and over again. It doesn't matter what others believe you can or cannot do. What matters most is what you believe you can do and you can achieve anything you believe. If you have hope, you will find a way to make it happen. Never stop believing.
Don't live in the past. There is nothing you can do about the past except learn from it. Focus on the future and all of its possibilities. You are the creator of your future and you can create the life you want by staying focused on a great outcome.
Look deep for opportunities. Opportunity doesn't go away, it goes to someone else. There are so many opportunities out there right now it is crazy. The greatest risk is the one you don't take. It is times like these when ordinary people have become extraordinary people because they create a new opportunity. Everything that exists in the world today was started by a single thought from someone like you and me.
Have fun in your life. Discover what makes you happy and bottle it. Life is so amazing when you are having fun. Work hard but play just as hard. Keep smiling because it's contagious. We are not here for a long time, but we can have a good time while we're here and a job isn't just a job if you are having fun doing it.
Exercise. Exercising on a regular basis will let you live a longer and healthier life. It gives you more energy. It makes you look better. And it greatly increases a positive sense of self.
Help others who are in need. You will get everything you want in life if you help others get everything they want in their lives. Helping people in need is an extraordinary feeling. Mentor someone who could use your wisdom because you will impact their life forever. Spend time with people who could use a friend. Volunteer your time and connections for local charities.
Commit yourself to never ending improvement. It is times like this when you need to sharpen your skills and knowledge so you can stand out above the rest of the crowd. Learn something new everyday. Read at least an hour a day. This is the information age, use the technology that you have available to you so you can be the best that you can be. Dedicate yourself to constant and never ending improvement.

Are You Addicted To The Internet?
There is no question that the internet is truly a wonder. Want to know something...almost anything? Search the internet and you'll find the answer. It is also an indispensable tool for work, education, and communication. But it can be so seductive that it can become an addiction and interfere with daily life, work and relationships.
When you feel more comfortable with your online friends than your real ones, or you can't stop yourself from playing games, gambling, or compulsively surfing, then you may be using the Internet too much.
The Internet provides a constant, ever-changing source of information and entertainment. Email, blogs, social networks, and message boards allow for both public and anonymous communication about any topic. But how much is too much Internet usage?
Spending a lot of time online only becomes a problem when it absorbs too much of your time, causing you to neglect your relationships, your work, school, or other important things in your life. If you keep repeating compulsive Internet behavior despite the negative consequences in your offline life, then it's time to strike a new balance.
Many people turn to the Internet in order to manage unpleasant feelings such as stress, loneliness, depression, and anxiety. When you are looking for a way to escape your problems, the Internet can be an easily accessible outlet. Losing yourself online can temporarily make feelings such as loneliness, stress, anxiety, depression, and boredom evaporate into thin air.
Signs and symptoms of Internet addiction vary from person to person. There are no set hours per day or number of messages sent that indicate Internet addiction. But here are some general warning signs that your Internet use may have become a problem:
Losing track of time online, having trouble completing tasks at work or home, isolation from family and friends, feeling guilty or defensive about your Internet use, feeling a sense of euphoria while involved in Internet activities.
Another problem is that about 50% of people online lie about their age, weight, job, marital status, or gender. When online friends meet and the real-life person fails to match the online persona, it can create profound emotional disappointment.
As much comfort as the Internet can provide, though, it's important to remember that there are healthier (and more effective) ways to keep difficult feelings in check. These can include exercising, meditating, using sensory relaxation strategies, and practicing simple breathing exercises.
An important aspect of overcoming Internet and computer addiction is to find alternate ways to handle these difficult feelings. It's worth spending some time thinking about the different ways you intend to deal with stressful situations and the daily irritations that would normally have you logging on.
Here are some tips for dealing with Internet addiction:
Ask yourself, "What am I missing out on when I spend so much time on the 'Net?'" Write these activities down and decrease your Internet time to do some of these activities.
Set reasonable Internet use goals and stick to them. Take frequent breaks, at least 5 minutes each hour, and do some other activity.
Alter your routine to break your usage patterns. If you spend evenings on the Internet, start limiting your use to mornings.
Seek out friends and acquaintances who "couldn't care less" about the Internet. Take time to appreciate the fact that all life is not yet online.
Stay connected to the offline world. Visit newsstands, book and music stores, and participate in entertainment such as museums, music, and live theater. Novels and poetry readings are hard to experience online.
Treat the Internet as a tool. Stay focused on the fact that the Internet is a means to an end. Plan your strategy-whether you're looking for information or entertainment-with the end in mind and you'll save valuable time.

Meditation Reduces Stress, Increases Attention
Want to improve your mood and attention while simultaneously reducing your overall anxiety, fatigue and depression levels? A new study indicates that less than one week of meditation can provide these effects. The study was comprised of 40 Chinese undergraduates partaking in 20-minute meditation sessions during a period of 5 days. The meditation used was referred to as integrative body-mind meditation that, according to researchers, included body relaxation, breathing exercises, mental imagery and mindfulness training. After the 5-days of meditation, those participating in the meditation had significantly more improvement with attention and mood testing as compared with the control group - those undergoing no meditation. Moreover, those in the meditation group had a significant decrease in stress related cortisol levels as compared with their non-meditation counterparts. Perhaps the most interesting finding in this study was the fact that these results were attained in just 5 days of 20-minute meditation sessions.

Anatomy of Mid Back
Rib Articulation
The thoracic is unique in that each of it's vertebrae attaches to a pair of ribs. There are 12 thoracic vertebrae and thus, 24 ribs (12 on the left and 12 on the right). Just like adjacent connecting vertebrae can misalign and biomechanically malfunction, so too can the thoracic vertebrae and it's adjacent ribs. When ribs "go out" or misalign in relation to their connecting vertebrae, the individual will often experience sharp pains in the area of the misaligned rib head, especially on twisting movements of the torso.
As with vertebral subluxations, chiropractors can successfully treat rib misalignments with the chiropractic spinal adjustment. The adjustment repositions the rib to it correct position and normalizes impaired motion patterns.

Orally Disintegrating Tablets
Continued from Yesterday
Compressed tablet systems are based on conventional tableting technology and are the easiest way to manufacture ODTs. Using conventional equipment, ingredients and a limited amount of processing steps makes this system a cost-effective manufacturing method. In this process, the active drug, diluents, binders and disintegrants are finely milled, blended and then compressed into tablets.
Some advantages of direct compression are higher dose delivery of active compounds as well as mechanically stronger, more robust tablets. A disadvantage is relatively slower dissolution rates when compared to freeze-dried tablets. Some well-known technologies using direct compression are OraSolv, DuraSolv and WOWTAB.

What is Metabolomics?
Metabolomics and Fresh Produce: Vegetables
Potato and tomato are two of the world’s top four most important vegetable crops. Both are eaten in a wide variety of forms, either cooked (tomato and potato) or fresh (tomato). Both are also cultivated and eaten in most of the world’s countries where they often represent a significant component of the daily diet. In tomato research, metabolomics is already being used extensively to help identify which components are linked to key quality traits such as taste and flavor and how these are influenced by variety and cultivation conditions.
Results have already revealed the complexity of taste and how different varieties/fruit types differ biochemically. Through metabolomics approaches, combined with detailed sensory (taste panel) tests, biostatistical analyses of the complex data obtained is allowing us to slowly build up a picture of the molecular basis of tomato taste and how this influences consumer preference. With this knowledge we shall gain a better hold on how, in future, we can specifically tailor breeding programmes to improve tomato fruit quality and taste.
In potato, scientists have utilized metabolomics technologies to assess compositional differences in existing cultivars in relation to consumer quality. For example, the levels of key amino acids isoleucine, tyrosine and phenylalanine were found to be higher in certain cultivars under certain growth conditions. This is of considerable relevance as these amino acids have been associated with post cooking blackening, bruising as well as flavor after cooking. Seasonality has also been shown to greatly influence the biochemical profile of potato tubers, irrespective of variety.

Low vitamin D linked to anemia
Children with low levels of vitamin D may have an increased risk of anemia, in which the body has too few oxygen-carrying red blood cells, U.S. researchers say.
Lead investigator Dr. Meredith Atkinson, a pediatric nephrologist at The Johns Hopkins Children's Center, and colleagues examined the relationship between hemoglobin -- how anemia is measured -- and vitamin D, by looking at data from the blood samples of more than 9,400 children, ages 2-18.
The study found the lower the vitamin D levels, the lower the hemoglobin -- the number of oxygen-carrying red blood cells -- and the higher the risk for anemia.
Children with levels below 20 nanograms per milliliter of blood had a 50 percent higher risk for anemia than children with levels 20 ng/ml and above. For each 1 ng/ml increase in vitamin D, anemia risk dropped by 3 percent, the researchers say.
In addition, the findings, presented at the annual meeting of the Pediatric Academic Societies in Denver, indicated only 1 percent of white children had anemia, compared with 9 percent of black children. Researchers have long known that anemia is more common among black children but the reasons remain unclear. The study suggests low vitamin D levels in black children may be an important contributor to anemia.
"The striking difference between black and white children in vitamin D levels and hemoglobin gives us an interesting clue that definitely calls for a further study," Atkinson says in a statement.

Berberine for Type 2 Diabetes
According to a pilot study, berberine may be beneficial for patients with type 2 diabetes.
Berberine, a bitter-tasting, yellow, plant alkaloid, is present in the roots and stems of various plants, including goldenseal and Oregon grape. Berberine has been used medicinally in Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine for years; however, clinical data supporting its use for various conditions such as type 2 diabetes is limited.
In a study conducted at Xinhua Hospital in China, 36 adults recently diagnosed with type 2 diabetes were randomly assigned to take 500 milligrams of berberine or metformin three times daily for 13 weeks. A separate group of 48 adults with poorly regulated type 2 diabetes was assigned to 500 milligrams of berberine three times daily in addition to their regular antidiabetic treatments. Glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) levels were the primary outcome measures of the studies. Fasting blood glucose, postpradial blood glucose, trigylcerides, total cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) and low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) were also assessed.
In the first study, berberine significantly decreased HbA1c by 2 percent. Significant deceases were also noted in fasting blood glucose and post-prandial blood glucose. Additionally, the berberine treatment group showed a significant decrease in triglycerides and total cholesterol. In the second study, berberine significantly reduced HbA1c from 8.1 percent to 7.3 percent. Berberine also showed a significant reduction in fasting insulin by 29 percent.
Although promising, additional research is necessary to confirm these findings.

Against the Wall High: Blood Pressure
Continued from Yesterday
NOS is an enzyme that aids in the production of nitric oxide (NO) from L-arginine, an amino acid that can reduce arterial blood pressure benefit both inter-media thickness and overall endothelial function.25,26 Arginine is normally produced in the body, but is also available from several plant and animal sources of protein, such as dairy and seafood.
In 2009, Japanese researchers reported on their population-based, cross-sectional study of 7,585 subjects (3,499 men and 4,086 women, aged 40 to 69 years) and associations between dietary intakes of total, animal, and plant protein and blood pressure.27 After adjusting for age, sex, community, body mass index, antihypertensive medication use, ethanol intake, smoking, and dietary intakes of sodium, potassium and calcium, they found a 25.5-g/d increment in total protein intake was associated with a decrease in systolic blood pressure of 1.14 mmHg and in diastolic blood pressure of 0.65 mmHg; a 19.9-g/d increment in animal protein intake was associated with a decrease in systolic blood pressure of 1.09 mmHg and in diastolic blood pressure of 0.41 mmHg.

Proper Lifting Techniques
The Squat Lift - Ideally, objects should be lifted via the squat lift. With the back relatively straight, the knees are bent so that low back stress is minimized. While this does not seem as easy or natural as simply bending forward at the waist it significantly minimizes the lower spinal stress which can lead to numerous injuries including intervertebral disc herniation. Also, keep the feet wide apart when lifting the object and be sure to keep the object as close to your body as possible.
When Bending The Knees Is Difficult - For individuals who cannot fully bend the knees in order to pick up objects some bending of the spine may be necessary. In these cases, be sure the object being lifting is not heavy and most importantly, be sure to keep the object as close to the body as possible. The farther the object is away from the body the greater the stress on the spine.
The Golden Rule of Lifting - As stated above, be sure to keep objects as close to the body as possible during the lifting and carrying of objects.
Repetitive and Heavy Lifting - Even when proper lifting techniques are used repetitive stress injuries to the spine will occur if objects are too heavy or lifting is done continuously to the point that the spinal musculature becomes fatigued. Never lift heavy objects alone - get assistance or use a dolly. Never lifting continuously to the point that spinal muscles become fatigued. This will dramatically increase the odds of sustaining spinal injury.

Massage Effective In Managing Dementia Patients
In the review of two clinical trials, Danish researchers have found that hand massage appears to calm patients suffering from dementia - the predominant symptom of Alzheimer's patients. The effects of dementia are difficult to manage - wandering, difficulty with eating and bathing, anxiety, confusion and agitation. It is very exciting to explore treatment methods such as therapeutic touch and massage in order to assist the relief of these problems naturally. While more studies are needed to evaluate the effects of massage on patients suffering from dementia, it is clear that different forms of therapeutic touch and massage have some very powerful and as of yet unexplored benefits on the human body.

Anatomy of Mid Back
Thoracic Facet Joints
The facet joints in the thoracic spine allow for considerable amounts of flexion and extension. The facet joints can become injured with excessive amounts of rotation and extension. Golfers are prime candidates for facet joint injury due to their repetitive twisting motions as they swing their golf clubs. When injured, pain is often sharp and localized to the area of the affected facet joint.

What's your child's fitness personality?
Continued from Yesterday
2. The Casual Athlete
Your child likes being active, but may not be driven enough to participate in competitive sports. Most children fall in this category. They are perfectly happy and fit – being casual participants.
Recommendations
Evaluate your child's fitness habits and set achievable goals.
Aim to fit in exercise 5 to 7 days a week.
Reward, praise and offer encouragement.
Vary physical activity routines.
Fit tip
Motivation is a crucial factor in any exercise regimen. Without motivation, it is all too easy to make excuses to slack off. Slacking off for a day can turn into slacking off for a week, a month, and eventually quitting the fitness habit altogether.

Orally Disintegrating Tablets
Continued from Yesterday
Common Types of ODTs
The two main forms of ODTs are freeze-dried formulations and loosely compressed tablets. Some industry members define a third delivery form as oral thin-film strip products such as Chloraseptic Relief Strips and Listerine Pocket Paks; however, as these formats are not tablets, they are not discussed in this article.
The most successful commercial ODT freeze drying manufacturing technology is the Zydis process, which was the first patented ODT technology to market. This tablet dissolves in the mouth within seconds after placement on the tongue. A Zydis tablet is produced by preparing an aqueous drug solution or suspension in bulk, dosing it into preformed blister packs and then cryogenically freezing it to ensure development of porous material. Next, the blister packs are moved to freeze dryers where most of the water is removed from the tablets. Last, the blister packs are heat-sealed to ensure stability.
This process results in a highly porous structure, which increases quick dissolution. Advantages include rapid dissolution, self-preservation from microbial growth and increased bioavailability. The main drawback is higher cost, due in part to a more time-consuming manufacturing process. Additionally, these tablets can have poor stability at high temperature and humidity conditions. Furthermore, these tablets are more fragile than others and must be packaged in special blister packs to prevent mechanical and moisture damage. Other technologies using freeze-drying techniques are Lyoc and QuickSolv.

What is Metabolomics?
Metabolomics and Fresh Produce: Fruits
Major fruit crops such as melon, citrus and grape (fresh and wine varieties) as well as some minor crops such as raspberry, strawberry and cranberry have already been subjected to metabolomics analyses. Through these approaches the influence of aspects such as fruit ripening, cultivation conditions, storage and shelf-life has been investigated and biochemical changes defined.
For example, metabolomics of melons revealed the three dimensional nature of fruit ripening in these large fruits (top to bottom/inside to outside). Analyses of strawberry ripening revealed the huge complexity of the process, which leads to a global reprogramming of the biochemical composition of the fruit within just a few days. The transition from green to white to red-ripe fruits is accompanied by dramatic changes (both in negative and positive senses) in a wide range of biochemical pathways enabling the conversion of an astringent hard tissue into the soft and fragrant one we like to eat. Never before have we had such a detailed insight into such complex processes.

Side effects if two depression drugs used
Doctors should not prescribe combinations of antidepressant medications for patients with major depressive disorder, U.S. researchers say.
Principal investigator Dr. Madhukar H. Trivedi, professor of psychiatry of the University of Texas Southwestern in Dallas, says researchers at 15 sites nationwide studied 665 patients ages 18-75 with major depressive disorder. Three treatment groups were formed and prescribed antidepressant medications already approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
One group received escitalopram -- a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor and a placebo. The second group received the same selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor paired with bupropion, a non-tricyclic antidepressant, and a third group took different antidepressants -- venlafaxine and mirtazapine.
After 12 weeks of treatment, remission and response rates were similar across the three groups: 39 percent, 39 percent and 38 percent, respectively, for remission, and about 52 percent in all three groups for response.
The study, published online Monday ahead of print in the American Journal of Psychiatry, found after seven months of treatment, remission and response rates across the three groups remained similar, but side effects were more frequent in the third group, which was prescribed two antidepressant medications.

Curcumin and Diabetes
A new study suggests that curcumin, a yellow pigment of the spice turmeric, may lower blood sugar and therefore may help treat diabetes.
Turmeric has been used in Asian food preparation, medicine, cosmetics and fabric dying for more than 2,000 years. Marco Polo described turmeric in his memoirs, and the herb became popular in Europe during Medieval times for its coloring value and medicinal uses.
Traditionally, turmeric has been used to improve gastrointestinal upset, arthritis and overall body energy. As an ingredient in foods, turmeric provides a yellow tint, as well as flavoring to curry dishes. Turmeric also plays a role in some Indian religious ceremonies. It is produced most extensively in India, but it is also cultivated in other countries in Asia and Central America.
Curcumin is the main constituent extracted from the roots of turmeric. During the 1970s, research began to focus on the pharmacological properties of turmeric and curcumin, particularly regarding possible anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.
Researchers from Sunchon National University, Jeonnam, Republic of Korea, investigated the effect of curcumin on insulin resistance and glucose homeostasis in male mice and their age-matched lean non-diabetic mice. The mice were fed with or without curcumin for six weeks.
The study found that curcumin significantly lowered blood sugar levels and it suppressed body weight loss in diabetic mice.
The study authors concluded that curcumin seemed to be a potential glucose-lowering agent and antioxidant in type 2 diabetic mice, but had no affect in non-diabetic mice.
Diabetes, also known as diabetes mellitus, is a chronic health condition where the body is unable to produce enough insulin and properly break down sugar (glucose) in the blood. Glucose comes from food and is used by the cells for energy. Glucose is also made in the liver. Insulin is a hormone produced by the pancreas, a large gland behind the stomach. Insulin is needed to move sugar into the cells where it can be used for energy needed for body processes.
Diabetes is associated with long-term complications that affect almost every part of the body. The disease often leads to blindness, heart and blood vessel disease, stroke, kidney failure, amputations and nerve damage. Uncontrolled diabetes can complicate pregnancy and birth defects are more common in babies born to women with diabetes. Pregnant women can temporarily develop gestational diabetes, a type of diabetes that begins late in pregnancy.
In 2007, an estimated 20.8 million children and adults in the United States, or seven percent of the population, had diabetes. An estimated 14.6 million have been diagnosed with diabetes (both type 1 and type 2), while 6.2 million people (or nearly one-third) are unaware that they have type 2 diabetes.
Diabetes is widely recognized as one of the leading causes of death and disability in the United States. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recognizes diabetes as the 6th leading cause of death in the United States, with over 72,000 deaths in 2004.

Against the Wall High: Blood Pressure
Continued from Yesterday
Calcium absorption requires sufficient vitamin D, another essential nutrient with some ties to blood pressure. An inverse relationship between plasma 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels and risk of incident hypertension in young women was reported in a late 2008 study from Harvard Medical School researchers, who noted young women with low levels of vitamin D had a substantially higher risk of hypertension than women with sufficient levels of the vitamin.14 In 2011, a report from the Jean Mayer USDA Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging at Tufts University, Boston, concluded while clinical evidence is lacking, observational data suggests “vitamin D supplementation could potentially have a strong preventive effect on some of these conditions and could reduce race-related disparities in their prevalence.”15
Two other essential vitamins are possibly involved in blood pressure. Vitamin C, which contributes to collagen production and vascular flexibility, may affect blood pressure by targeting increased oxidative stress associated with the condition.16 Japanese researchers found 600 mg/d ascorbic acid significantly reduced systolic and pulse pressure in elderly patients being treated for hypertension.17 And 1,000 mg/d of vitamin C added to antihypertensive therapy reduced systolic blood pressure and decreased oxidative stress in an Indian trial.18
Vitamin C taken along with vitamin E affects blood pressure and several related parameters. A University of Pisa, Italy, trial showed hypertensive men taking vitamin C (1 g/d) and vitamin E (400 IU/d) for eight weeks experienced significantly improved flow-mediated dilation (FMD) and arterial flexibility, as well as vasodilation and oxidative stress parameters.19 Similar research found hypertensive men taking vitamins C and E for eight weeks had significantly lower systolic and diastolic blood pressure, in addition to higher serum antioxidant capacity.20
A closer look at vitamin E reveals the effects of specific fractions on blood pressure. Early work from a Malaysian research team found as much as 320 mg/d of tocotrienol-rich vitamin E (TRE) was well-tolerated and increased plasma concentrations of alpha-, delta- and gamma-tocotrienol, but did not significantly affect arterial compliance, plasma total antioxidant status or LDL cholesterol levels in normal subjects.21 However, their subsequent research revealed a self-emulsifying TRE preparation in varying dosages (50 mg/d, 100 mg/d and 200 mg/d for two months) generated a trend toward arterial compliance.22 Further, results from Texas Southern University, Houston, research team indicated supplementation with gamma-tocotrienol may enhance total antioxidant status, reduce lipid peroxidation in plasma and blood vessels and inhibit blood pressure increases.23 Their follow-up work detailed how gamma-tocotrienol may improve blood pressure by increasing nitric oxide synthase (NOS) activity, which is reduced in hypertension.24

Taking Mini-Breaks and Stretching
Taking small periodic breaks doesn't just allow you to have a mini-mental vacation from the constant reins of work, it's also an important opportunity to reduce built-up physical tension by stretching out your contracted and tensed body. Every 30 to 40 minutes your body needs to move, stretch and get out of any position that it's been stuck in.
Assuming that your working position is in the seated posture, the following stretches can be performed throughout the day, everyday, to keep your body happy and healthy. All stretches should be held for 15-30 seconds and performed 1-3 times, depending on the amount of time you have. Hold the stretch in a position in which you can feel the muscles comfortably stretch.
Important Note: Do not perform any exercise or stretch without the recommendation of a licensed health care professional. If performing exercises or stretches at the recommendation of a licensed health care professional, immediately discontinue and seek professional medical assistance should unusual or abnormal pain and/or discomfort arise. Any and all exercises, stretches or similar contained within or available from this website are meant only for active patients of our office who have been specifically advised to perform said exercises, stretches or similar.
Basic Neck Stretches
Eyes To The Sky - Extend your head backwards while allowing your mouth to open. Allowing your mouth to open allows for a greater stretch to the muscles of the anterior neck. If you experience any balance problems, stretch the neck in the seated position only.
Ear To Shoulder - With your head centered over your shoulders, drop one ear to the same side shoulder. You should feel the opposite side of your neck stretch. You may increase the stretch by applying pressure to the top of the head with your hand. Repeat on the opposite side.
Chin To Chest - Drop your head forward while tucking your chin in towards your neck. Place one hand on the top of the head and gently apply added pressure if you wish to increase the stretch. This stretch affects the posterior cervical musculature.
Lateral Torso Stretch - While seated, grasp the lateral thigh or armrest of the chair with your opposite side arm and rotate your torso by pulling with the hand. Repeat to the opposite side.
Anterior Torso Stretch - In a seated or standing position with your hands interconnected place them behind your head and neck. Then, squeeze your shoulder blades together and extend your back slightly.
Posterior Torso Stretch - In the seated position with your buttocks on the forward edge of the chair, spread your legs apart and lean your torso forward, between your legs. If your back and hamstring muscles are tight, you will feel them stretch during this movement.
These are just some of the many stretches which can and should be performed frequently.

Zinc Reduces Colds By One Day
According to a review of research published by the Cochrane Collaboration, an international organization that evaluates medical research, zinc supplements appear to shorten the length of colds by approximately one day as well as lessen the symptoms. Their findings are based on based on 13 trials with close to 1,000 participants who either took zinc or a dummy treatment at the beginning of their symptoms. Two other trials indicated zinc helped stave off colds, but the research quality of the studies were considered poor. Exact zinc dosage and formulation for optimal effectiveness is not known, nor is the mechanism of how zinc reduces the length and symptoms of colds. It should also be noted that taking zinc over a long period of time should be done carefully as it can interfere with other metals in the body resulting in unpredictable consequences.

Anatomy of Mid Back
Thoracic Intervertebral Discs
The intervertebral discs in the thoracic spine are located between adjacent vertebrae. They function as spacers to provide clearance for exiting spinal nerves, as connectors to link adjacent vertebrae together and allow for movement, and also as spinal shock absorbers.
The discs of the thoracic spine are less likely to become injured compared to those of the cervical and lumbar spines, making up only 2% of intervertebral disc herniations. This is because of the rib articulations made by the vertebrae which significantly increases the stability of the thoracic spine. This does not mean that the discs of the thoracic are immune from damage, rather, statistically less likely to become injured.

Orally Disintegrating Tablets
Continued from Yesterday
Reasons to Use ODTs
ODTs offer ease of use and increased overall patient compliance. ODTs offer a value-added alternative for patients who cannot swallow conventional hard tablets or gel caps. These patient groups include those with dysphasia, the elderly, stroke victims and bedridden patients. Some patients also refuse to swallow conventional tablets such as uncooperative pediatrics, geriatrics and psychiatric patients. An additional, but often overlooked, benefit to ODTs is the convenience factor for patients who do not have readily available access to water due to travel or as part of our modern “on the go” lifestyles. These are all reasons that often lead to poor compliance with conventional tablets.
Recent market studies indicate more than half of the patient population prefers ODTs to other dosage forms,2 and most consumers would ask their doctors for ODTs (70 percent), purchase ODTs (70 percent) or prefer ODTs to regular tablets or liquids (greater than 80 percent).3

Herbal Remedies
Children's Herbal Antibiotic Formula
2 cups water
½ teaspoon echinacea root
½ teaspoon licorice root and
½ teaspoon barberry bark (or Oregon grape root)
Place water and herbs in a saucepan. Simmer for 2 minutes, then remove from heat and steep for about 20 minutes. Strain out herbs. For a 50-pound child, give 1 cup of tea or half a dropperful (30 drops) of tincture daily. To improve the flavor, the tea can be mixed with an equal amount of juice. In fact, homemade apple and grape juice, unlike bottled juices, contain strong antiviral agents that fight colds and flu.

What is Metabolomics?
A look at how metabolomics can be used as a tool in the future of food quality improvements.
The conclusion to a three part series, this third and final article examines the application of metabolomics in the raw material production process.
As previously detailed, metabolomics has been developed as a new high-throughput analytical chemistry platform for the deep analysis of the biochemical composition of biological materials. The technology takes many forms and there are no real limits to the biological fields of application. Already metabolomics has been used in the medical industry for disease monitoring and the discovery of infection biomarkers, as well as microbial fermentation industry in the production of beer and high value chemicals. But perhaps the widest field of application has been in the area of the plant sciences.
Many uses for the technology have been found—in fundamental research for enhancing our understanding of how plants function—but primarily in applied plant science and nutritional science, where metabolomics is being used to help different industries improve plant-based products. One main area of application is using the technologies to advance knowledge of the biochemical composition of our crop-based foods and how we might improve this through targeted breeding and production/processing strategies.
Below are listed a small number of the many areas of metabolomics applications in the crop and food industries of relevance to food and nutritional quality.

Taller men at higher blood clot risk
Men who are tall and obese have a greater risk of blood clots that can kill them suddenly, researchers in Norway say.
Senior author Sigrid K. Braekkan of the Hematological Research Group at the University of Tromso in Norway used data involved 26,714 adults 25-97 from the Norwegian town of Tromso. The researchers tracked the study participants for a median of 12.5 years from 1994 to 2007. During the study period, 461 venous thromboembolism -- a blood clot in the lung often caused by a blood clot in a vein, especially a vein in the leg or hip area.
The researchers found venous thromboembolism were more then five times higher in obese men who are almost 6 feet or taller compared with short men -- about 5-foot-8 or shorter -- men of normal weight. Tall men of normal weight were 2.57 times more likely to have a venous thromboembolism, while short obese men had 2.11 times higher risk of venous thromboembolism.
"We believe that we observed the increased risk in tall and normal-weight men, but not women, because most women do not get sufficiently tall," Braekkan says in a statement. "The risk may be present in very tall women, but there were too few to investigate this properly."
The finding are published in Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis and Vascular Biology: Journal of the American Heart Association.

Obese can suffer from social anxiety
Obese people with social anxiety related only to their weight may have anxiety as severe as those with social anxiety disorder, U.S. researchers say.
Kristy Dalrymple of Rhode Island Hospital says the findings conflict with the criteria for SAD used by the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 4th edition.
The researchers evaluated a group of people who were seeking bariatric surgery. The individuals were separated into three groups -- 135 diagnosed with SAD using the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 4th edition; 40 classified as "modified SAD" who experienced clinically significant social anxiety related to weight only; and 616 with no history of psychiatric disorders.
The study, published in the journal Depression and Anxiety, found both the SAD and modified SAD groups were rated as having poorer social functioning as adolescents compared to the group with no disorder.
In addition, the SAD group was rated as having more time out of work in the past five years due to psychopathology or emotional reasons compared to both the modified SAD group and the no disorder group.
Those in the modified SAD group experienced more disruption in their social life, the study says.

Curcumin for Heart Health
Curcumin, the yellow pigment of the Indian spice turmeric, may have several heart or cardioprotective effects, a new study reports.
Researchers from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, explained that curcumin is extracted from the powdered dry rhizome of Curcuma longa Linn (Zingiberaceae) and it has been used for centuries in indigenous medicine.
They noted that: curcumin has a protective role against myocardial necrosis (heart muscle death); curcumin has antioxidant activity; curcumin may enhance the activities of detoxifying enzymes; and curcumin inhibits free-radical generation in myocardial ischemia (heart attack).
The review covered the following aspects: (1) the history of curcumin and its discovery as a potent drug with relevance to cardiovascular diseases; (2) mechanistic role of curcumin in vitro, emphasizing the antiplatelet and anticoagulant effects; (3) cardiovascular properties of curcumin; (4) application of curcumin in different animal models (viz. myocardial ischemia, myocardial infarction, cardiomyopathy, and arrhythmia in vitro and in vivo); (5) curcumin free-radical scavenging activity, particularly against O2 radical and depletion of the oxidative stress.
Curcumin is also being studied for the prevention and/or treatment of: cancer, dyspepsia (upset stomach), peptic ulcer disease, cholelithiasis prevention/cholagogue (gallbladder contraction/bile flow stimulant), hyperlipidemia (high cholesterol), osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, scabies, HIV and uveitis (inflammation of the membranes of the eye).

Against the Wall High: Blood Pressure
Continued from Yesterday
Given the focus of the DASH diet, it should be no surprise the oft-heralded Mediterranean diet, which also favors plant foods and healthy fat and protein foods, has also been shown beneficial to blood pressure control.3 In the 2009 study of a cohort of 8,594 participants aged 20 to 95, researchers found an inverse link between fruit/vegetable intake and risk of hypertension among those with low olive oil consumption (less than 15 g/d). However, a 2011 research report in the journal Hypertension detailed how Greek children have elevated sodium intake from hidden sources (not table salt or cooking salt), mainly processed versions of foods that are daily staples of the Mediterranean diet, such as cheese and bread.4
This dietary research raises the question: Are the plant foods in the DASH and Mediterranean diets beneficial due to substitution or do they have protective effects? If recent research on botanical-based products is any indication, plants have protective or therapeutic benefits to blood pressure management.
First, a diet rich in fresh fruits and vegetables is thus high in vitamin and mineral intake. Increased intake of calcium, magnesium and potassium has been inversely linked to blood pressure levels, with one study showing salt reduction, particularly in combination with increased intake of these minerals, substantially lowered blood pressure.5
On its own, magnesium intake may be inversely connected to incidence of hypertension, while deficiency has demonstrated a negative effect on arterial thickness and stiffness, arterial pressure and incidence of hypertension.6,7 The mineral has also shown the potential to regulate blood pressure,8 possibly by modulating vascular tone and influencing vasodilation and inflammation.9 Who benefits from magnesium’s blood pressure benefits is not entirely clear, as Korean researchers found oral magnesium supplementation in healthy adults (diabetes-free, normatensive and with normal magnesium levels) had no effect, while those with hypertension and normal magnesium levels experienced lower blood pressure after supplementation.10
Magnesium is needed for optimal absorption of calcium, another mineral that has shown some potential to positively affect blood pressure. A study of more than 900 middle-aged men found consumption of dairy products and dietary calcium were both significantly and independently associated with low levels of systolic blood pressure.11 As shown in the research on DASH, the key to dairy’s positive role in blood pressure is in being low-fat; A Harvard trial confirmed this theory, as a cohort of 28,886 U.S. women showed intakes of low-fat dairy products, calcium and vitamin D were each inversely associated with hypertension.12 Looking further at calcium’s role in cardiovascular health, a 2010 New Zealand study found two years of calcium supplementation (600 mg/d or 1200 mg/d) in 323 generally healthy men had no significant effect on ratio of high-density lipoprotein (HDL) to low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, weight, fat mass, lean mass, triglycerides or total, LDL, or HDL cholesterol, but there were downward trends in blood pressure in the treatment group.13 Specifically, those with low calcium intake who received 1,200 mg/d calcium had an average drop of 4.2 mm Hg systolic and 3.3 mm Hg diastolic pressure, compared to those taking placebo. Similar results were found for those with low magnesium intake.

Short Course on Ergonomics
Setting Up Your Workstation
Having a well planned, ergonomically designed workstation increases productivity, minimizes repetitive stress injuries, increases employee morale, and increases the bottom line. Since everybody has different tasks and different body types, no one workstation setup is ideal for everyone. There are, however, some basic guidelines that should be abided by when designing a workstation.
Space - There needs to be adequate space for you to comfortably accomplish all tasks required of you. If you're constantly running into others or cannot properly function due to lack of adequate space physical and emotional stress increases while productivity decreases.
Equipment - Having the proper equipment which has been designed for the task at hand is essential. Equipment should be compatible with other equipment and be ergonomically designed to conform to your specific duties. Chairs should move freely in the work area and fit under desks and tables, lighting should fully light all work areas while not reflecting off of monitor screens, and computers and monitors should fit desks properly so screens can be read in comfortable positions and computer discs can be inserted without getting on all fours under the desk.
General Layout - Plan ahead. If you know what tasks you will be performing and what equipment you need, draw a floor plan and include equipment, furniture and accessory placement. Be sure keep those items used most frequently within reach are nearby to minimize strain and twisting. Commonly used equipment and other materials should be within reach from your primary workstation position.
Accessories - Add stackable document holders, have your rolodex nearby, purchase telephone headsets and any other items which can help to organize your workstation and keep all important and frequently used materials within your reach

Apples & Pears
Apples & Pears Are All The Same To Your Heart
It was previously widely believed that those with a pear-shaped figure were less at risk for developing heart disease when compared to those with an apple-shaped figure. However, a new study has found that the shape of one's body does not have any impact on their risk for heart disease. Rather, the risk for heart disease is based on one's BMI (body mass index) and specifically having a body mass index of 30 or more, regardless of one's body shape. BMI is determined by dividing one's weight in kilograms by one's height in meters squared. The 10-year long study was based on 220,000 people and involved almost 200 scientists from 17 different countries.

Weight Loss Going Functional
The direction of the weight management industry is shifting away from “better for you" products like diet and low and light foods toward functional weight management products, according to Leatherhead Food Research. In a new report, the market research firm said the international weight management market was worth an estimated USD7.3bn in 2009, and it is set to grow year-on-year at between 6-8 percent for the next 5 years.
Leatherhead predicted a successful weight management product will need to be both convenient and offer a benefit which can be felt quickly, if not immediately. Consumers want a clear benefit and message, a good taste and a product that makes them feel satisfied.
Growth so far has largely been due to innovations within the bakery and cereals and the beverage markets (which currently hold shares of 33.5 percent and 28.4 percent respectively). Beverages and cereals (the latter of which includes cereal bars) remain the most prolific sectors for weight management claims across the globe. This is largely due to the functionality of the products (i.e. their ability to ‘carry’ other ingredients well), as well as the fact that they are generally perceived by consumers as both convenient and healthy.
The “Future of the Weight Management Market" presents information on the trends which help to shape this industry, with a focus on major market product sectors such as beverages, dairy and snacks. The report also details the latest ingredients being used in the weight management sector. The weight management product areas include products which make a claim (either direct or indirect) relating to weight management, satiety or weight control. This covers appetite suppressants, satiety products, fat and carbohydrate blockers, and metabolism boosters and regulators and also considers ‘low’ and ‘light’ foods (e.g. low in fat, calories etc.) when relevant.
