What is healthy living or the change in lifestyle that the doctors keep recommending?

Why is hypertension so lethal? Why do we need to take less salt? What to do when you already have hypertension? What is fat? Is aspirin good?

What are the diets for modern living? How connected is the mind to matters of the heart?

These are some of the questions that keep popping up in the minds of people looking for health tips

Living longer, Living better by eminent cardiologist Lionel H. Opie traverses through many more of these questions and gives a scientifically-backed opinion in many cases.

The book was released by Shashi Tharoor, MP, at a function organised during the Cochin Cardiovascular Summit 2011 here recently.

The programme was organised by the Lisie Heart Institute in association with the International Conference of Coronary Artery Disease and Diabetes.

In the information explosion era, it is difficult for the people to get the right kind of information through a single window, says Dr. Opie in his introductory remarks. There is an overload of information, he says.

‘Misleading'

Many reports are contradictory and often misleading”, he states. The book, he says is aimed at those who strive for optimal long-term health and maximal functioning of their hearts and minds.

From countless original articles in scientific journals, listening to experts and also keeping his ears open when patients tell their experiences, Dr. Opie has managed to write a guide for the readers to follow to protect themselves against heart or brain deterioration.

Giving an insight into what to look for in checking the key health parameters, Dr. Opie believes that though 120/80 is considered normal blood pressure, the ideal is 115/75. He recommends lifestyle changes in pre-hypertensive group of people with blood pressure ranging from 130/85 to 140/90.

For those with diabetes and kidney disease the 130/80 parameter should be considered as hypertensive and should be treated for underlying causes.

How good is green tea? What do the nuts in diets do? He wonders whether a healthy mind leads to a healthy heart going with the logic of a healthy heart leading to a healthy mind.

How true are the various studies and just how compelling are the facts they claim, he wonders in his book.

Dr. Opie has to his credit over 600 scientific articles published in leading journals and as contributions to books.

His book titled Drugs for the Heart continues to be a major referral book for post-graduate students of medicine.
